Georgia is one of the few states which does not permit filing of the initial claim online, however you may certify and continue your claim by using paperwork available to you on the Georgia Department of Labor site.

Unemployment insurance, or what are called UI benefits are a kind of temporary income that is given to those Georgia workers who are displaced from their job through no fault of their own, but merely in response to economic or other factors. You are eligible for unemployment if you are displaced for factors that have nothing to do with you, are seeking employment or have a definite date when you will be recalled to your position at your former place of employment.

You may file for unemployment insurance at any office of Georgia Department of Labor and your benefits, or the amount you will receive will be determined by factors such as former wages, availability for another job, and remain eligible so long as you continue to seek active employment and are available to work if called to work.

When you arrive at the Georgia Department of Labor office to file your unemployment claim, you must bring certain paperwork with you to prove identity and eligibility.
Those papers include:

Social security number or social security card.

Employer separation notice or letter if one was given to you

The names and addresses of any company for which you worked for the past 18 months time.

If you are not US born citizen, you must bring with you proof of your right to work in the United States.

If you are asking direct deposit, you must bring an account number and bank routing number.

Unemployment claims are not effective automatically the last day that you worked. They are effective the date they are filed and in Georgia are NOT retroactive to your last day of work, so filing as soon as possible after your last day of work is imperative in order to claim all that you can claim and begin receiving your checks as soon as possible.

Georgia DOL Site and the Services it offers.

It can and does happen to the best of us. You’ve been a model employee but one day you arrive at work and find out that you don’t have a job any longer. Now the biggest thing in your life is to financially survive until you can get another job. Georgia, like all other states offers you unemployment compensation if you’ve lost your job through no fault of your own. Unemployment compensation is paid by taxes to the employers you work for to help those who are out of work.
In Georgia, the Department of Labor is the group which administer unemployment and will help you in finding another job.

Filing for unemployment should take place as soon as you find out you are no longer employed. Your benefits won’t start the day you are out of work, but not until a certain time span after you file for the unemployment compensation.
The Georgia Department of Labor site www dol state ga gov offers you several services that will assist you in coming to terms with your newly unemployed status.

The Georgia Department of Labor site offers resources such as the UN claimants handbook, that will help you learn about your rights and responsibilities under the law and what you can expect from the unemployment program.

They will also offer you the handbook on appeals in the state, to assist you in filing an appeal if you are denied unemployment compensation for any reason.

Georgia Department of Labor dol state ga gov) also permits you, using a pin number, to review the dates of your unemployment benefits and to check on how much you have been paid so far in order to keep track of your remaining benefit time.
While you may not, so far as we can tell, sign up for your unemployment on the Georgia Department of Labor site, you may enroll in weekly certifications, as well as claim weekly benefits before you begin approved training by printing out and submitting certain forms which are presented as a PDF

.

Additionally the Georgia Department of Labor site, www dol state ga gov)gives you the opportunity to review job openings in Georgia and to submit applications to help you replace your lost job.

when you want to find out more about your unemployment, seek a new position or find out how many weeks of unemployment you may have remaining prior to seeking extensions under the federal program, the Georgia Department of Labor site can be a big help to you, the displaced worker.

Although employment is declining in many states, Georgia being one of them, certain companies will assuredly have openings, and even in some cases, companies which are currently experiencing a down sizing and need to lay off workers, will have those positions that it is necessary to fill.

Projections for the Georgia workforce state, (via Georgia Workforce Trends Reports) that between now and 2012, Georgia’s total employment is projected to increase to about 4.9 million jobs, which is about a seventeen percent increase over what it is now.
The three areas which will lead that growth are said to be service providers, such as professional and business services, healthcare and social assistance, which will account all together for more than half the new business growth which Georgia predicts. The only position which is a goods producer that is projected to grow and is in fact growing now, is the construction industry.

The occupations which are seen to be losing the most jobs, or experiencing the most layoffs and decline in overall business seem to be textiles and apparel, but because there is a big turnover or a rapid turnover in those jobs, even though they are declining, there are still job openings in that arena.
Utility jobs too are expected to decline by about one percent, which, while not a big decline is still significant if you were to place yourself in that position currently, since it is projected to continue to decline in Georgia.

Education areas are also projected to grow in jobs and prosperity, so if you’re seeking employment in the state of Georgia currently, based upon the predictions of those in the know, the best place for you to lay your educational dollars may be, health care, education positions such as teaching and the construction industry, which are all projected to grow and continue to experience growth for several years.

How Can I File for Unemployment Insurance Online?

Georgia Department of Labor is the official site of the Georgia Department of Labor, which oversees the unemployment compensation in the state of Georgia.
You will find a variety of services there, which may benefit you, the job seeker and unemployment claimant in continuing your claim processing, however, Georgia Department of Labor does not permit initial filing for unemployment claims online, and this must be accomplished in one of the offices of the GDL.

How Do I Know If I Qualify?

Determining eligibility depends on several factors but generally follows these guidelines:
If your unemployed status is through displacement, such as economic downturn or downsizing of a company, generally you will be eligible for unemployment compensation, and can file as soon as a few days after you’re released from your employment position.

IF in fact you left the position at which you were employed and the reasons for leaving were not compelling, or were fired or released from your position for some type wrongful conduct, chances are good that you will not be eligible for unemployment compensation in Georgia.
The final say in the eligibility of anyone is the decision of the Georgia Department of Labor.

How Much Will I Receive?
Determining the amount of unemployment you will receive differs slightly from state to state, but a good general rule of thumb is that you determine the eligible quarters of the year in which you worked. The quarter year, or three month period that you worked which had the largest salary, or compensation to you, is the quarter that is used to determine your unemployment compensation amount.
The quarter year with the largest salary is taken and divided by 26. This amount will be an approximation of the amount you will be paid weekly while you claim unemployment benefits.

When Does The First Check Arrive?

As we stated previously, its important to file, even if you have to accomplish a waiting week, as quickly as possible after knowing you are unemployed. The time span in which you will receive your first check varies and can be from two to four weeks. This means, that it will NOT arrive two to four weeks after you become unemployed, but from two to four weeks after you initially file, so filing as quickly as possible is certainly the right move.
